DESCRIPTION: Height up to 30cm. A short, erect, hairy annual with soft yellow flowerheads that resemble Hops. The leaves are are trifoliate, alternate and notched. Each leaf measures up to 10mm long. The flowers are borne in spherical clusters of up to 40 and becoming brown when aging. The pea-like pods contain brown seeds. DISTRIBUTION: A widespread plant through the UK but becoming scarce towards the North. HABITAT: Dry grassland, roadside verges, dunes and low rough turfy areas. FLOWERING TIME: June to September. EXTRA NOTES: A plant that is useful in agriculture due to the foliage being used as food. |
